OPERA

project

ABSTRACT

The “OPERA” project is an initiative funded by the European Commission under the ERC – Proof of Concept program in order to consult the feasibility of introducing a Fully-Implantable MEMS-Based Autonomous Cochlear Implant.

CHALLENGE

Current cochlear implants include an external part that includes the microphone and its batteries that need to be recharged or changed quite often. By incorporating all parts of the implant inside the patient’s head, it would provide a new way of restoring hearing abilities that comes close to the natural functioning of the human ear.

SOLUTION

OPERA, provides a different approach for fitting of the cochlear implants. The whole system can be fully implanted eliminating the issues with current systems. The main objective of the OPERA project is to assess if the market is ready to accept the radical innovation proposed.

IMPACT

Day One plays a key role in the project, as partner for the business development activities. Through the implementation of consolidated techniques for product development – in compliance with the requirements of the market and future users – Day One will follow the project from the early stages of product design to its industrial version.

In fact, the role of Day One is essential for the creation of a marketable product. The experience in creating new business opportunities starting from scientific research is a key factor for the development of the future startup whose core business will be linked to marketing of the new cochlear implant.

Completing and extending the skills within the team, creating economic value starting from radical innovation is what distinguishes Day One in its Venture Building activity.

By becoming an integral part of the project and the OPERA team, Day One will be able to fully enter the team of the new startup that will be created at the end of the project, thus achieving its Venture Building objective
